On being a leader

Great leaders are those who stand tall in a crowd and who find opportunity in challenges rather than intimidation. Poor leaders talk in a small voice and walk around with stooped shoulders, as if they carried a great weight there. But that is the truth. You got a lot on your shoulders as a leader of a group or a company, and it's up to you and your leadership skills to steer everyone's directions towards glory and success.

A great or even a very good leader must be greater than the sum of his parts. There are skills that every leader must have, but it is his dedication to the cause and to the people under him that truly makes all the difference.

That love and dedication is something you must find out for yourself. But on the topic of skills—team building, public speaking, listening skills, memory and problem-solving skills, and the ability to influence greatly—this is where we got something to say.


What a leader has to offer

Team building skills

A leader is only as good as his team allows him to be, and likewise a team is only as good as its leader. So picking a leader with good team building skills is a must.

For the constituents, maybe team building means going out and having fun with the team and forgetting about the dreary hours at the office. But here's the thing. To a leader, team building is about something else – something bigger. To a leader, team building is about opening the lines of communication between members, re-motivating them, and reacquainting them to the company's vision. Team building is an important facet of good leadership.


Public speaking and listening skills

You can't be a good leader if you can't talk in public. As a leader there are many obstacles you need to overcome, and fear of public speaking is one of them. Leadership training seminars often require their participants to deliver an impromptu speech just to give them a heads up on how difficult, and fun, it is to be a leader.

Good listening skills is a must, too. Going through all that trouble of organizing a team building activity isn't worth anything if all lines of communications are one way. It's important that your learn to listen to the people working for you if you want them to hear you in the same way.


Memory skill and problem solving skills

A good leader must be alert and physically and mentally ready at all times. How would you feel if your supervisor keeps forgetting your name, or is always mistaking for someone else.

Same goes for problem solving. A person's problem solving skills are probably inherent, and so the aims of a leadership training seminar is not to teach it but most likely to sharpen what's already there.


Making something out of nothing

Perhaps the greatest feat a leader can ever accomplish is the ability to make a leader out of another person—a friend, a regular employee, or a person who happened to walk in during your speech. It's the matter of influencing people the right way, and bringing out the best in them, that truly distinguishes the special role and purpose of a great leader.


What's in store for a leader like you

There's a great big deal in store for a leader in our time. For instance even if you're applying for a desk job, having a leadership seminar on your resume is always a good thing. Employers like to hire people with leadership qualities because leaders are serious, hardworking, and responsible at their jobs. It's fair to say that leaders are always one step ahead of everyone, all things considered.



It's not a question of “how can leadership training help you?” But it's a question of “will you let it help you?”
